Study Objectives:

The aim of the lecture is to present basic concepts of Czech modern history, culture and art.

Following chronological order and necessary historical context, lecturer will present the most significant figures and works in visual arts, architecture, and selected literature. Where possible, a later film adaptation of these works will be presented as well. The course will continue in a spring semester with similar introduction to history and art in Czechoslovakia and contemporary cultural currents in the Czech Republic.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assignment:

Written essay, three pages long, based on one of the fiction titles listed in ?selected literature? and focused on historical contextualization of these works.

Essay in printed form.

During oral exam students will defend their views expressed in essays in a conversation with a lecturer.

Evaluation:

Essay: 50%

Participation in the class: 20%

Final oral exam: 30%
