Study Objectives:

The aim of the lecture is to present basic concepts of Czech modern history, culture and art.

Following chronological order and necessary historical context, lecturer will present the most significant figures and works in visual arts, architecture, and selected literature. Where possible, a later film adaptation of these works will be presented as well. The course will continue in a spring semester with similar introduction to history and art in Czechoslovakia and contemporary cultural currents in the Czech Republic.

It is helpfull to participate in History and Culture in the Czech Lands 1836-2009 1, but it is not necessary.

Recommended optional programme components

Visits to Museum and galleries in the Czech Republic, reading of Czech literature and watching Czech films.

Underground culture of the 1970s, Plastic People of the Universe.

Happenings and Performance art

Colorful 1980s. An emergence of mythological postmodernism, arranged photography, new wave music and amateur theatre.

Contemporary Perspectives. ?Explosion of time? after 1989 and retreat to intimacy. ?Bad mood? and polite return of politics to current Czech culture.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written essay, three pages long. A paper based on one of the fiction titles listed in ?selected literature? and focused on historical contextualization of these works. Essays are due on May 3rd, 2011, in printed form.

During oral exam on May 10th students will defend their views expressed in essays in a conversation with a lecturer.

Evaluation:

Essay: 50%

Participation in the class: 20%

Final oral exam: 30%
