The goal of the seminar is to introduce the students to the characteristics of the genre

?biographical film?. We will look at the various stylistic forms and cinematographic practices, the crossover of avant-garde-, documentary- and feature films. My teaching attempts to give a practical insight into the production of a biographical film since my own thematic focus as a filmmaker is biography.

The seminar provides an overview of biographical representation ranging from self-portrait in the Avant-garde Film to the Hollywood biopic. The focus of the seminar is on portraits of artists. Stories of the lives of famous people in fiction films have been very popular in recent years. In the documentary field, in contrast, the person portrayed frequently comes from everyday life and might be an outsider. The fascination of the portrait is rooted in the fact that the audience identifies with another human fate.

Showing various examples, we will consider major aspects and problems of production (sources and ethics of research, aesthetics, ideology and historical context, film production and finance, & reception). An analysis of narrative structures and aesthetic models will be made. Some of the artistic examples are works of Early Cinema by the brothers Lumi?re, Georges Melies and the Edison Studio. Avant-garde film is represented by Andy Warhol, Marie Menken, Jonas Mekas, Ken Jacobs, Jan Svankmajer and Maria Lassnig. Examples of documentaries are by the Maysles, Sergei Eisenstein, Ric Burns, the Brothers Quay and Keith Griffiths, Petr Vaclav, Stanislaw Mucha and my own works. The possibilities within the context of fiction film will be illustrated by work on the biography of Franz Kafka (directed by Steven Soderbergh, 1991),Frida Kahlo (directed by Julie Taymor 2002) and Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick in „Factory Girl“ (directed by George Hickenlooper 2006).
