Study Objectives:

This module will provide an introduction to the renowned visual language of Czech feature and animated films -- focusing primarily upon the exceptional works of Czech cinema, especially those of Ester Krumbachová, Miroslav Štěpánek and Karel Vachek (whose works were all banned for many years.) Both Krumbachová and Štěpánek, the founders and key innovators of Czech New Wave Film Art and the ?Czech Animation School?, have similar characteristics and historical significance as Sergei Paradzanov.

Course contents:

Lecture topics will include:

- A consideration on how these exceptional artists discovered and evolved their individual visual language

- An exploration into how Czech contemporary filmmakers of lesser renown tend to form their visual language

- Discussions on how exceptional foreign filmmakers use visual language differently from Czech filmmakers ?

differences and common aspects

projections and discussions concerning the visual or sound characteristics of the classics as well as contemporaries

These lectures will concentrate on famous visual and comedy aspects of the Czech and world cinema, and will also provide a comparison projection of unseen, less known and unique film and art material (by Jiří Trnka, Ester Krumbachová and Miroslav Štěpánek, Václav Mergl, Karel Vachek, Jan and Eva Švankmajer, Jan Němec, Oldřich Lipský, Miloš Forman, Tomáš Vorel, work of the best Czech DoPs).

In addition the module will provide a practical component, including:

Several practical exercises utilizing adaptable literature.

Tutors consultation of the students visual material.

Workshop exercises will lead the student to develop their own ?Film Key ideas? or Visual Language, as well as assist him to gain a broader knowledge about the art of film direction as well as visual concepts.
