Study Objectives:

The English horn is an instrument in many music ensembles. This course gradually provides students with all skills and knowledge needed for playing the English horn. Students are divided according to abilities. There is an introduction to the techniques of how to properly play the English horn. Considering student abilities in playing the instrument may greatly differ individual paths of instruction are chosen. As well, the reason why the student wants to play the instrument is definitive for course methodology. Students are introduced to the instrument and its potential. For those who are more advanced on the English horn, easier etudes are used to define their playing issues and the most feasible manner of correction is sought.

Mode of delivery:

On-going participation of students in symphony and opera orchestra auditions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Instrument skills corresponding to the study year and student profile.

Recommended optional programme components

Chamber literature in duet, trios and other combinations of wind, string, keyboard and percussion instruments.

Course contents:

The English horn is an instrument in many music ensembles. This instument is prominently used in solos, orchestras and other music genres. This course gradually provides students with all skills and knowledge needed for playing the English horn. Students are divided according to abilities. There is an introduction to the techniques of how to properly play the English horn. Considering student abilities in playing the instrument may greatly differ individual paths of instruction are chosen. Individual approach and the acceptance of different skills is the way to get the less adept to a good level of playing. Many want to play the instrument for practical reasons, in which there are many advantages in competing for orchestra chairs. Students are introduced to the instrument and its potential. For those who are more advanced on the English horn, easier etudes are used to define their playing issues and the most feasible manner of correction is sought.

Czech Phiharmonic orchestra parts.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

On-going participation of the student in symphonic and opera orchestra auditions.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment of instrument and orchestra playing. Fulfillment of the established repertoire. AKS certification. All concluded with awarding of credit.
