Study Objectives:

The task of the course is to align the knowledge level of the students in dance history. This should enrich their to-date theory knowledge at the visual level and provide them with the basics for analytical work with a staging.

Course contents:

In the first semester the instruction focuses primarily on the introduction of dance staging documenting this historical development of the study. Considering the availability of film material, the course focuses primarily on the Baroque theatre period, the location of dance in it, including an introduction to theatre, machinery, etc. The pre-Romantic ballet period (historicizing this version of ballet is futililty); the romatic period is extensively represented including issues in training and a presentation of Romantic ballet references. The semester closes with an introduction to the phases of late-Romantic ballet (ex: thorugh modern versions of the ballet Excelsior).
