Study Objectives:

1. Introduction to the particular environment of Opera

2. Introduction to the structure and organization of an opera house.

3. Introduction to the economic operation of Opera and various types of financing

4. Introduction to running of an opera institution in relation to the prepration and implementation of an opera staging.

5. Enable students to get an overview of opera institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Mode of delivery:

lectures, moderated discussions, analyes of opera performances attended, analysis of a model budget.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

No knowledge requirements necessary.

Course contents:

The organization of an Opera is a complex process which must respect artistic, economic and practical viewpoints vertically and horizontally.

1. Opera - The genre of Opera and its particulars

2. An opera house's structure - artistic and non-artistic professions, management.

3. Opera house organization

4. Opera ensembles in the Czech Republic - brief characteristics, artistic direction, finance, mulit-ensemble theatre, perspectives in theatre with opera.

5. Opera houses in Europe and the USA - function, financing, repertoire

6. Opera festival in the Czech Republic and abroad

7. Artistic elements of an opera ensemble

8. Non-artistic professions and elements

9. Opera house dramaturgy - criteria, requirements, dramaturgic plan

10. Planning - production, weekly and monthly planning, year plans, multi-year plans.

11. Economic aspects - budget, income and expenditure, sefl-sufficiency, professional fees

12. Labor and monetary relations.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on activity in lectures and development of the course paper.

During the semester independent readings are required. The overal grading is comprised of 20% for activity in lectures, 30% for the written and 50% for the oral exam sections.
