Study Objectives:

Seznámit studenty se scénografickými metodami jednotlivých umělců, pochopit principy jejich tvorby a se znalostmi historie scénografie pracovat na samostatném scénografickém tématu.

Mode of delivery:

Classes on historical resources related to individual productions. Searching for sources of inspiration. Relationships in the work of the director. History of the Prague Quadriennale.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

DEA 1 and DEA 2 lectures.

Recommended optional programme components

Visits to contemporary productions and subsequent analysis from a scenic design viewpoint.

Course contents:

Through investigating documentation about productions (photography, critiques, memories, correspondence, sketches) students find the methods of the most distinctive Czech set designers of the first half of the 20th century. Systematic work with resource material, creation of their own view of stage methods and investigation of sources of inspiration. Writing of an independent course paper of approx. 20 pages.

Selected Chapters - Diderot, Aronson, Brandesky, Gombrich, Francastel

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Visits to fine arts exhibits, the scenic design depositary of the Theatre dept. of the National Museum.

Assessment methods and criteria

75% class attendance, independent creation of the course paper and its presentation (approx. 20 pages of text).
