Study Objectives:

The course aim is to open the road to a knowledge of literary types, genres and genre variations in literature for children and youth and their development.

1. Introduction to the roots of literature for children and youth and the origin of creations intended for children.

2. Introduction to folklore as an important source of literature for children.

3. Introduction to the development of literature for children and youth from the 18th century to the present with an emphasis on contextual relations.

4. Understanding of the specificity of literature for children and youth and place for creations for children and youth in a nationwide context.

5. Recognition of the dramatic and drama-education potential of a literary work for children and youth.

Mode of delivery:

Readings, moderated discussion, text analyses, creative group work.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

1. Completion of „Chapters in Literary Theory.“

2. General knowledge of the history of literature at the pre-college level.

3. Ability to perceive various elements and merits of a creative text.

4. Creativity.

Recommended optional programme components

Monitoring of modern literature, in particular creations for children, reports about them. Potential for attempts at one's review of new titles.

Course contents:

> Non-illusion literature (literature over language, experimental works) and addressing children.

> Pre-history and ancient history of literature for children.

- Aesthetic functions in literary works for children and their place among other functions.

- Issue of so-called children's standpoint.

- The origin of literature for children and youth at the end of 18th Century.

> The pre-Romantic and Romantic and Czech and World literature for children.

- Folklore and literature for children and youth.

- Types and Genre of Literary folklor.

- Entry of the fairy tale into literature (16-18th Century)

- The path of the folklor fairytale to literature (from the beginning of the 19th century to the present)

> Changes in authored fairy tale prose from the beginning of the 19th century in Czech and World literature

- Hans Christian Andersen

- Origins of modern nonsense

- Typology authored fairy tales and fairy tale prose

> Czech and World poetry for children in the 19th century.

> Modern poetry for children and youth.

- The Avant Garde and poetry for children (1930s and 40s.)

- Czech poetry from the 1960s.

- Free verse and poetry for children and youth

> Child heros and their image in literature.

- Issue in typology of narratives with child heroes.

- Narratives with child heroes and their changes in the 19th and 20th centuries.

- The turn of the 1950s to 60s - opening of new roads for narratives with child heroes.

- Possibilities of identification and self-projection in works for children and youth.

- The newest chapters in the development of narratives with child heroes - cliche and unexplored paths.

> Adventure narratives and their changes from the beginning of the 19th century to the present.

- Genre variations in adventure literature from a historic perspective.

- Sci-fi and fantasy literature.

- Adventure literature - it potential and risks for drama training and theatre work.

> Features of modern literary context and space for creation for children and youth in it.

> Periodicals for children and youth - a look into the history and a sketch of the current situation.
