The fundamental goal of the course is, on the theory level, a basic knowledge in the foundations of music instruction and a general historic overview of the development of music. Students master elementary recorder playing and use their abilities in playing other instruments and vocal experience in ensemble playing. Student coursework is completed by a in skilled individual music practice, mastering music theory, recorder, singing of folk songs from the area of their residence and general music overview.

- Course contents:

1. Fundamental music concepts
Sound, tone, tone characteristics, tone systems, tuning systems, Music terminology.
2. Notation
Historical overview on the development of notation.
3. Scales
Church, major, minor, chromatic, whole-tone, pentatonic, „Gypsy intonation“ and scale playing.
4. Intervals
Upper and lower intervals, basic and derived, scalar and non-scalar.
Intervals over an octave.
Intonation and playing intervals.
5. Chords.
Definition and constructing chords.
3-tone chords and their inversion.
Dominant 7th chords and their inversions.
Seventh chords.
Creating additional voices for a given melody.
6. The „time space“ of music
Pulse, meter, rhythm.
Simple and complex measures, syncopation, pick-up measures, dotted notes.
Music tempo markings
Single and Multi-voice rhythm practice
7. The „color space“ of music
Primary tone, harmonics.
Introduction to acoustics.
Musical instrument systems - Classical, historical, folk, electronic.
Musical bodies - vocal, instrumental, chamber and symphonic.
8. Music forms
Motif, theme, opening phrase, closing phrase.
Working with music motifs.
Large and small forms
Song form, sonata form, variation, rondo, canon
9. General overview of European music thought:
The period up to the Gregorian Chorale.

11. Singing
Natural singing a capella of folk songs from the area of one's birth (residence) with consideration of one's vocal abilities.
12. Didactics of rhythmic and vocal-instrumental activities
Juding the appropriateness of a composition for children of various age groups according to the score.
Methods and manners of rehearsing vocal and instrumental compositions.

Credit is awarded based on exercise participation,study of trade literature and mastery of playing one selected instrument. The exam is oral. The overall grading is comprised of 60% for class participation, 40% for the oral exam.
