Course contents:

The art of exploring starting points, procedures and functions of set design in the creation of a audiovisual work. The purpose of the course is to illustrate the elements of directing and camera as a integrated part of the film work.

It is necessary to increase the interest of students in various studies through film examples which will serve as illustrations of selected topics. In any study it is impossible to ignore its history, in architecture this is particularly so. Set design has its root here. Therefore we wll cover these topics, but not as lectures which do not bring much to the students. Ancient heritage cannot be ignored but it is possible to quickly cover it by parts of films situated in those times and subsequently point out the construction, details, composition and rules. In the European consciousness this is a constant living reference and inspirational basis. We will also devote ourselves to what is usually not apparent at first sight and that which is particularly extraordinary in maturity, optically elusory, and polychromic as the result of hundreds of years of uninterupted development. This is not a review of primary school material but an exploration of starting points which are part of history. We are lead through the continuous development of European archtecture style periods based on film examples other image material. We will pay special attention to the Rennaisance and particularly the Baroque, which has left a significant footprint on our country. There is an extraordinary application in synergy and connection among various artistic disciplines and their mutual influences. Modern architecture and art today would otherwise be dominant.

During the seminar the students master the basics of drawing as a means of communication and for setting in the mind. The aim of this activity will be to „practice eye and hand“, best in direct contact with the object whether an interior or exterior. In the study of a particular style period the student will visit certain spaces and capture it through drawing pencil on paper. The aim will be to perceive the effect of all the elements in the creation of an audiovisual work.

Set design takes place in a space. Experiencing the space can only happen through one's own visual contact with it. Prague provides sufficient opportunity and as well is worth consideration for providing students with the opportunity to view examples of historical architecture up close. Suggested are excursions to Kutna Hora, and along the way, a visit to castles Kačina and Bečvára with the aim to draw and photograph the location. St. Barbora's Cathedral is a particularly unique example of high Gothic. Students would be challenged to capture such a large space without prior experience. They may begin with details and of course samples of Imperial style construtions. The castle holds a library and theatre with preserved details. This is an example of regional creation. The may also be a visit to the Veltrusa castle and region. The exact times and places will be determined during the course.

These excursions may take place over the course of two semesters, one in the autumn and the other in spring. The student drawings and photographs may be occasionally exhibited.
