Using particular film examples this course aims to illustrate directing methods frequently used in film situations (e.g. chase scenes, dialogue scenes, introducing the film's main characters, etc.). The purpose of this analysis is not to provide students with a strict recipe to be applied in every given situation, but to open up their awareness of the enormous potential of film language.
This course is intended for students who already have a fundamental knowledge of film language and creative approaches. Two basic approaches will be used during the course:
1) Based on examples from at least three different films which handle the same situation (ex: a chase) we discuss the possible shooting methods and in general the construction of such a scene.
2) Based on excerpts from a literary screenplay of an existing film, students shoot one scene. In the course of shooting there is an analysis of a few of the storyboards which have arisen and at the end a comparison of particular scenes of the film
Topics:
1. The difference between the so-called „American way of shooting“ through a master shot and the „European method“ which does not distinguish importance in individual shots in a sequence.
2. Manners of introducting a film's main characters
3. A chase
4. The first and last shot in a film - their particulars and significance
5. Directing a whole sequence in one shot, challenging arrangements
6. A fight
7. A dialogue scene
8. Building tension in a thriller
9. Building tension in a horror film
10. Building tension in a psycho-drama
11. Building tension in an „art film“
12. Linking sequences
List of films:
Film examples will be selected primarily from generally know films, mixing classics and the latest films. It would be good for the students, before the beginning of the course, to know these films in order to join in analyses of their broad connections (This can also be done during the course of the year.)

Seznam filmů:
Ukázky z filmů budou vybírány především z obecně známých filmů, směsice klasiků a novějších titulů. Bylo by dobré, aby student ještě před začátkem semináře znal tyto filmy, aby se mohl zapojit do analýzy širších souvislostí (může to ale dohnat i během roku).
