Study Objectives:

Cílem studia je detailnější pohled na proměny autorského rukopisu reprezentativních tvůrců filmového dokumentu, jejichž snímky jsou nahlíženy metodou close reading, tedy pozorným zkoumáním, které vychází z autonomního uměleckého díla.

Mode of delivery:

A short introduction to the works of selected documentarists. Subsequently each student presents some of that persons films and presents prepared examples. Example analysis takes place in discussions about individual films.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Completion of faculty-wide lectures in the history of world film and world documentary film.

Recommended optional programme components

No elective requirements. A good orientation in cultural, historical and socio-political relationships is required.

Course contents:

This course begins with lectures in the history of world documentary film and in discussion circles focuses on a complete analysis of selected documentary works. Through detailed readings is enables a maleable image of the documentary canon. The basis will be supplemented with a library of selected world documentarists' works. The course focuses, primarily, on a glimpse into the development of the creative styles of selected filmmakers ia broad societal-historical and cultural context. The library of documentary film provides students with independent work with selected films so they may be able to present them to their colleagues including selected examples and prepared topics for discussion. Students aquire direct experience with various lines of documentary film development and, as well, a opportunity for their own interpretation of the selected work which is the fundamental element of the course. As a whole, with an introduction by the instructor to the work, individual contributions of the students and group discussions the course allows for a better knowledge of the work of a selected creator.
