Study Objectives:

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of music dramaturgy in AVD with an emphasis on animated film. Students are introduced to the concept of music dramaturgy, basic aspects which influcence the creator or dramaturgist in the selection of music for a given film, to dramaturgy principles, the role of music in film. In no small manner, students are also introduced to the basics of music concepts and music theory so they have a certain literacy in communicating in the studio and in cooperating with the music composer or a dramaturgist. Part of this field is also the study of musical instruments and their use in film and also an introduction to musical styles and directions whose result is an expansion of the cultural horizon and a better orientation in the selection of the right music or music for a film or a portion of it.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

No prerequisites for registering for this course. A certain experience with playing a musical instrument or an orientation in musical styles are advantages but not a condition.

Recommended optional programme components

1. Creation of one's own music and sound archive.

2. Analysis of the music dramaturgy of selected key films in film history (ex: Markéta Lazarová), rehearsed creation of sound scores

3. creative music dramaturgy practice on one's own project beyond the instruction framework

Course contents:

1. The concept of dramaturgy in film, sound dramaturgy as a part of the film dramaturgy, music dramaturgy as a part of the the sound dramaturgy.

2. Sound composition, the sound plan, sound score

3. Fundamental aspect for the selection of music, music archives and original music, music citations.

4. Working in a team, individual professions vs. sound, respectively music in film.

5. Introduction to music theory, tones, noises, tone characteristics, pitch, length, loudness and color.

6. Musical instruments and their use in film music dramaturgy.

7. The essentials of the storyboard in relationshiop to the music and the whole sound element.

Most of the study material can be obtained by students at the lectures which are also available in written form.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures, study exercises, analysis of examples.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on:

- participation in the lectures and exercises

- completion of the final test

- attendance

During the semester active participation is required in the lectures which is a condition for credit. The final is a written test and is comprised of two parts; Theory, focused largely on Music Dramaturgy an a practical part which verifies the students knowledge of music theory. The overal evaluation is made up of: participation in lectures - 20%, written test - 60% and attendance - 20%.

The conditions for successful completion of the course : Active participation in lectures, attendance of at least 50% and completion of the written test, which has point classification and for credit at least 40% of the points must be reached.

Note:

Students who do not have at least 50% attendance must appeal to the instructor for additional exercises, records of their studies and must justify their absence. If not done, the student will not be allowed to sit the semester test and credit will not be awarded.
