Study Objectives:

Students acquire basic knowledge about Central European cinematography, mainly considering the most significant points and movements (that is, the Czech and Slovak New Wave, First, Second and Third Polish Cinema, Contemporary Rumanian New Wave, Hungarian Waves of the 50s and 60s, etc.)

Mode of delivery:

Theory classes including lectures, screenings, film excerpts and finally debates.

Feature film screenings presented by the lecturer.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

The lectures do not presuppose any previous knowledge of Central European Cinematography therefore there are no conditions for registration.

Course contents:

A short description of the cinematography of five Central European nations; Czech, Slovak, Polish, Hungarian and Rumanian: Each will have 2-3, 90 minute lectures devoted to them plus an appropriate number of screenings of feature films (1 lecture + 1 screening each week); Exception: Slovak cinematography; in consideration of the rather small number of films there will be only one lecture and one screening. A short sequence of other recordings will be presented during lectures; working language - English.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

If possible the lecturer will attempt to cover all the lands whose cinematography the course includes, a guest from the appropriate cultural institute or embassy who will present a social-historical context of the given land. The lecturer will also, in addition to film information, provide additional excursion, etc.

Assessment methods and criteria

For successfull completion of the course the student must sit an oral exam or write a ten-page essay at the end of the semester.

Considering the complexity of Central European orthographies and pronunciation the students will have available layouts with brief content from each lecture.
