This course and accompanying excursions will introduce students to the history and culture of the Czech Republic and of its capital Prague in the different historical periods and also show the development of its urban structure and main social functions. Students should gain a deeper understanding of the particularities and intricacies of the central-European life and culture and its development through the centuries.
(April 27 - 28, 10 am - 4 pm earliest)

Students are expected to walk cca. 5 km on the first day, and 7-8 km on the second, take their notes and participate in the class. Please take suitable walking shoes, warm dress(!), umbrella and a small snack (for the second day) with you.
Credits obtaining conditions: 100% attendance + test

First day: April 27, Friday
a) Introduction in the classroom:
Natural and historical conditions of Central Europe, the place of Bohemia and Moravia. Czech history and culture in the European context.
b) Excursion: A walk from the Old Town and New Town to Vinohrady.
Historical development of the city of Prague. The city as a crossroad: the roads, the fords, the bridge, and six independent historical cities of Prague. Romanesque, gothic, Renaissance, baroque, the 19th century and the inter-war Prague ? its different urban plans, architectures and cultures.
Second Day: April 28, Saturday
An excursion from the suburb of Nové Butovice, via city periphery to the romantic countryside.
Czech lands under the communism and the development of gigantic panel housing estates in the 1960´s-1980´s: From the communist utopia of better future to nowadays reality. (Why it seems so ugly today and why it did not work?)
Czech weekend culture as a reverse side of the city life: Czech landscape, countryside city outskirts and their cottages, holiday homes, groups of allotments and tourist nature trails.
Post-communism and the boom of American style city suburbs, their life, culture, political aesthetics and architecture.
