What would happen if ...? (Investigating New Possibilities for Narrative Film)

This module will focus on developing new and unexpected narrative forms and effects for a range of different films. Participants will be provided with both practical and conceptual perspectives from which to start transforming and enriching their own work with narrative film. This will centre on rethinking and re-imagining standard approaches to scripting and editing film by introducing individual methods of experimentation and observation. It will also involve considering narrative film in close relation to other artistic forms and modes of expression (graphic, literary, performative and plastic forms). By rearranging and reconsidering various procedures within the production of film it is possible to start to substantially revitalise and reshape the narrative potentiality and use of resulting film material. The module will run over four days and two weekends. Each day will be based on the introduction of a different topic or method of research. Participants will be required to produce a short film sequence that records the progress of his or her research in the module.

Day One: „Film and other art forms“

By viewing excerpts from the films by a number of well know filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock, Jim Jarmush, Chantel Akerman we will look at how these films are able to be considered in relation with other art forms including painting, literature, music and theatre. This will offer a basis or framework from which to begin considering and developing processes of ?form-finding? with regards to individual approaches to narrative filmmaking. Participants will begin working on an ?ideas notebook? that records and guides their work within the module.

Day Two: „Alternating between visibility and invisibility“

Creating effective film sequences means considering what falls outside or beyond visibility as much as what remains visible and recognisable. Innovative models for this can be found within experimental film, painting and graphic art. Short Films by John Smith, Aida Ruilova, Christoph Janetezko, Margaret Tait amongst others will be screened and discussed. Participants will select sequences from their own films for a series of specific exercises that highlight and explore qualities/uses of visibility and invisibility.

Day Three: „Drawing from observation and intuition“

The process of drawing, whether for practical or aesthetic reasons, provides an important model and means to envisaging and exploring different narrative possibilities for film. Films that use drawing as a visual and structural motif or stylistic basis will be screened and discussed. The heightened levels of observation and intuition that are produced when drawing will be applied to redesigning and re-visualising the photogenic or spatial qualities of selected film sequences made by the participants.

Day Four: „Making do by making mistakes“

As in science and mathematics, the role of the mistake can hold an important but often-overlooked part within the production of film and art. By concentrating on the artistic potentiality of mistakes and qualities or elements generated by them offers a valuable resource for enriching and transforming the effectiveness of any narrative film. Intentional and unintentional mistakes can be used as a way of remaking/re-visualising selected film sequences. For instance ?errors of continuity and recognition? can delineate opportunities for redirecting and re-intensifying the narrative intent and impact of a film sequence. A number of recent short films that transform narrative structures and effects by altering and manipulating standard rules of continuity and cinematic meaning will be screened and discussed.
