Study Objectives:

The aim of this course is to present basic modern media critical theory from the 1920s to the present. The secondary aim is to prepare students for selectled SZK areas.

Mode of delivery:

Lecture: presentation of instructor experience, creativity.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

On-going tests in Literature

During the semester tests in literature are arranged. The test is over priorly established readings and checks the understanding of key concepts. The test asks for a development of three short expositions (15-20 lines).

The test dates are in the Winter semester 2010/2011: 25.11, 15:30, room 215

(Make-up dates will be based on doctor's written excuse of illness during the test date other than instruction and according to agreement.)

Demonstration of knowledge at the final written test (max. 40 pts.)

Expostion for one of the selected books from the recommended literature - is part of the final text as an indepedent assignment (max. 5pts.) (For this the student selects one book from the „Further recommended literature“ point.)

prokázání osvojených znalostí v závěrečném písemném testu (max. 40 b.)

anotace k jednomu vybranému titulu z další doporučené literatury - je součástí závěrečného testu jako samostatné zadání (max 5 b). (K tomuto bodu si studenti vybírají jeden titul z oddílu Další doporučená literatura.)

Course contents:

1. Introduction

Presentation of individual topics. Introduction to study literature. On-going written and oral tests. Definition of the concept of „critical theory“ and „media critical theory“. Is it possible to find a common denominator in theory which is called critical? The viewpoint of communication in media critical theory:

representation of reality

cultural productions

Class ruling instruments

technology, globalization, cultural imperialism

2. Representing reality I

Definition of the concept „epistemiology of the media“ and sectioning the theory according to its epistemiological position into destrutivist and constructivist. Comparison of the destruction of reality hypothesis in media with a metaphorical investigation of paradise lost and review of supporter classical concept of the destructivist approach.
