Studenti se naučí pracovat s historicky cennými klasickými materiály,
osvojí si metodologii a postupy restaurátorské práce, obsahující teoretické a filmově-historické studium, a získají praktické dovednosti při práci s přístroji, které se k restaurování používají.
Po skončení studia mohou najít své místo ve filmovém archivu v Praze i jinde mimo Českou republiku, nebo se mohou soustředit na badatelskou práci v tomto oboru v jiných příbuzných institucích (vysoké školy, ústavy pro humanitní směry apod.). Znalost činnosti filmových archivů a jejich restaurátorské práce je užitečná i pro studenty, kteří se v budoucnu budou věnovat aktivní filmové činnosti (režiséři, střihači,?).

Instruction takes place in the workplace, the screening room and in the restorer's workshop of the National Film Archives, Praha 3, Malešická 12. A presentation of the instructor's and technician's experience is used.

Instruction location: dependent upon the number of students: theory lectures may be in the screening hall NFA Praha 3, Žižkov, Malešická 12, the practical instruction section in the restoration workshop NFA Praha 3, Žižkov, Malešická 12.
History of conservation activity and its issues in general and specific film categories.
Basic questions and issues in film restoration.
Practical activity: restoring selected films in all phase from the beginning of restoring to the final verson of the film (or its parts) and final documentation.
Introduction to the National Film Archive and its activities.

- Modern approaches in restoring art monuments with an emphasis on the basic practices in that trade which also play a role in film conservation
- The demarcation of the four virtues of object conservation: aesthetic, historical, antiquity value and use value
- Introduction to the International Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites, Venice, 1964 and other recommendations
- New trends in conservatorship in the 20th century when photography and film entered the care of cultural heritage

3) Introduction and instruction of practices necessary for film conservation.
- introduction to the workplace and restoration equipment, their use (spooling machines, traction table, editing comparison table with two image, splicers, welders)
- introduction to film old and new film material, its damage and that which threatens it (emulsion and film base damage, ribbing, shrinkage, non-funtional perforations, moulds, up to material decomposition, vinegar syndrome, etc.)

- historical overview of the origins of the first film archive
- origins of the International Federation of Film Archives

- the activities of both organization in the field of film conservancy
- inclusion of a film into UNESCO monument protection
- UNESCO and Council of Europe recommendations for the protection and preservation of film heritage
- origins of the Czech Film Archives, its formation and changes through the years
- historical overview of conservation activities in the FIAF archives

7) Care of film material
- a visit to the NFA in Hradištěk and Třebsín
- preservation (preventative conservation)
- regular inspection of preserved materials
- damaged material repair
- preparations for copying nitrate and acetate materials
- film post-copying inspection
- comparison of color process results (coloration, bending ,chemical toning)
- the final phase in preserving film material - reconstruction and conservation of films which require a conservator's intervention
