New Narratives

The idea of documentary practice might bring to mind more traditional approaches to the picture story. Taking this as a starting point, you will be invited to reappraise the „historic“ conventions of documentary photography and explore some alternative strategies for story telling and visual communication - strategies that may allow you to respond to ideas that interest you in a fresh and exciting way.

However, the first consideration will be content in all aspects. The single element that makes it possible to label a series „documentary“ is the works engagement with social, cultural, political or economic issues of the day -at whatever level (personal, geographical, political?.) we acknowledge them.

Style and method of production are a second obvious consideration and should be appropriate to the intended context of the completed work (the gallery, the book, magazine, public art project, installation, time based presentation etc). A broad research base and an appreciation of the „placing“ of contemporary photography is something we will encourage you to develop throughout the course of our meetings.

This is an opportunity to create new work that challenges methods and solutions that may be tired or no longer successful forms of visual communication. You will be encouraged to explore ways of thinking around issues you feel moved to respond to, employing strategies that may allow a more urgent communication of your ideas and concerns. You will be encouraged to consider ways of disseminating your images into the world. By considering context and markets, you will begin to refine your practice, and demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of the siting of contemporary documentary work. Through discussion, case studies and formal review, you will develop a confidence when introducing your ideas and pictures.

Aim of the module is

-to look at and discuss a range of contemporary and recent case studies pertinent to documentary practice,

-to initiate a piece of new practical work to be developed between March and June

-to consider the technical and creative development of your work as engaged practitioners.
