Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is management of the basics for tuning some regular and irregular historical systems. A matter of course is a glimpse into those systems, and understanding of their characteristics. Knowledge is necessary in the use of tuners with historical temperatures.

Practice activity - tuning, moderated discussion

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Basic tone frequency perception skills, their relationships (distinction of pure intervals and character).

Recommended optional programme components:

Continuous practice in tuning, ex; individual intervals, later possible correction of unsuitable tones of the practice instruments.

Course syllablus:

A) Theory preparation:

Knowledge in acoustics is supplemented to the measure needed for practice (basic instrument functions, relation to the tempered systems, historic and aesthetic aspects)based on the to date knowledge of the student. Division of the the octave into 12 parts - historical open regular and irregular and closed regular and irregular temper systems. Introduction to more divided systems, relations to the harpsichord (16th and 17th century). Construction of the Pythagorean, symphonic (pure intonation), chromatic comma. Units of measuring the size of the interval and particular pitches. Basic historic currents in tuning in theory and in practice in the Baroque. Potential notation of pitch, relation and quality of interval, 5th chords, diatonics chromatic in given tuning systems, table orientation. Circle of fifths as the most common tool for reading chords.

B) Practical application:

Working with tuning keys, pins, perception of beats and their number per second. Tuning pure intervals is the basis for any tempered system. Creating the Pythagorean triad, pure triads 4;5;6. Tuning - dividing syntonic comma between two 5ths (Krinbergr II), three fifths, 4 fifths (Kirnbergr III, basis for French types of tuning, division of the Pythagorean comma (Werckmeister III) and tuning an entire instrument in that system. Division of commas into 5 parts (Bach-Kellner), 6 parts (Tartini-Valotti). The height of skill represented by central tone tuning, at least classically. or Zarlino 2/7.

Assessment methods and criteria:

During the whole semester the student independently tunes according to instructions. At the close instruments are to be prepared at the appropriate temperature. Theory knowledge is supplemented by literature and additional materials.
