Learning outcomes of the course unit:

All issues regarding trumpet playing - fingering technique, intonation, proper breathing and interpretation are improved on more demanding etudes with and emphasis on those deficiences which have not yet been mastered. When single staccato is of a high quality, double staccato is improved.

1. More demanding etudes for fingering and rhythmic precision - W.M. Smith, J. Kolář.

2. Double taccato is instructed. If single staccato is not in order, double staccato is instructed in later courses.

3. More imaginative recital pieces - student use their own music ideas - J. Francaix, P. Eben.

Mode of study:

Stage practice in solo creations, chamber ensembles and smaller or symphony orchestras. Regular presentation in the performance classes and playback of independent instrument classes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to the study year and student profile.

Recommended optional programme components:

Chamber literature in duets, trios and other combinations of wind, string, keyboard and percussion instruments.

Course contents:

This course provides students with techique, tone quality, intonation and performance skills in order to withstand competition in soloist, chamber and orchestra music. It guides the future artist to independence in implementing their own ideas and defending their thoughts. This is the basis of instruction. The development of the student's personality is the priority. All issues regarding trumpet playing are improved in etudes by W.M. Smith, J. Kolář with an emphasis on those deficiencies which have not yet been mastered. Attention will again be paid to instruction of double staccato. Balance and production of each tone should become a matter of course. As well, if the single staccato is not completely in order, more attention should be given to it for longer periods. Recital compositions are oriented towards works with greater imagination where the student must use their own thoughts and ideas - J. Francaix, P. Eben.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Student participation in Chamber Music competitions and auditions for symphonic and opera orchestras.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Student performance is assessed in all facets of performance. First of all the composition the student played is examined and individual pitfalls of performance are pointed out. Also assessed is how the student dealt with these problems. Noted, as well, is the playing level of the student in terms of technique, intonation, sound, dynamics and performance.
