Learning outcomes of the course unit:

A recognition and understanding of individual choreographers and their works, as well as the mutual relationships in the continuing process of new ballet forms in theatre culture in the 20th century.

Mode of study:

Presentation linked to a study of icongraphy. Selected original texts and samples of recorded choreographic works

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Completion of 20th Century Ballet History 1

Recommended optional programme components:

Music listenings. Visits to art exhibits and introduction to film of the discussed period, i.e. the first half of the 20th century.

Course contents:

Bronislava Nijinska as the first important ballet choreograher in the first half of the 20th century. Her collaborations with Ballets Russes and performing ensembles.

Les Noces - an example of the constructivist approach to choreography.

Leonide Massine, the multi-faceted choreographer and charismatic performer of the demi-character style, his ballets with ethic influences (ex: Le Tricorne), humor in his works (Les Femmes de Bon Humeur, Gaite Parisienne), ballets with spiritual content and symphonic music (Choerartium).

George Ballanchine, creator of the neoclassic line in choreography of 20th century ballet. His Apollo Musagetes. Other works for ensembles in Europe and America, the characteristics of his relationship to music, ballets to symphonic music. The educational contribution. His New York City Ballet ensemble.

Maurice Bejart as the popularizer of ballet arts in the second half of the 20th century and his Ballet of theTwentieth century. The most important works and character of his ensemble.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Participation in lectures, paper on a selected artist, completion of the final test, oral exam. Overall grading is comprised of 25% for the paper, 25% from test results and 50% for the oral exam.

Conditions for successfull completion of the course: participation in lectures, completion and presentation of the paper, completion of the test and oral exam.
