Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Introduce students to modern 20th century set-design considering film set-design.

Mode of study:

Lecture, discussion, analysis of presentation of productions.

Visits to contemporary productions and subsequent analysis from a scenic design viewpoint.

Course contents:

Lectures and classes with presentation of the most important set design work of the Czech Theatre Avant Garde of the 1920's and 30's. A paper on a selected topic in the history of Avant Garde set design in film. Searching for sources of inspiration and contexts of film set design from the history of theatre and photography

- Josef Čapek - relation of painting to set design

- František Troester - Scene urbanism and imagination

- Theatregraph, D 34, E.F. Burian, Laterna Magika - stage and film

- Alexandr Vladimír Hrska and Antonin Heythum - do Fauvism and Constructionism exist in set design_

- František Zelenka - pre-war activity and Terezín

- Bedřich Feuerstein - purism or surrealism

- František Muzika - poetic surrealism

- Karel Svolinský, Jiří Trnka, František Tichý as set designers

- Josef Svoboda and new set design technology.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Analysis of contemporary productions from the viewpoint of knowledge of traditional scenic design methods. Practical application of trade terminology. Visits to exhibitions and subsequent classes on methods applied in fine arts exhibitions (exhibition content, scientific contributions, exhibition critique, architectural treatment, graphics, lighting, etc.)

Assessment methods and criteria:

75% attendance at lectures and classes, independent creation of the course paper and its presentation (approx. 10 pages of text), oral credit.
