- Learning outcomes of the course unit:

1. To present issues of critical thought about theatre in its breadth.
2. To introduce student to the function of theatre criticism.
3. To introduce issues of the mutual relationship of theatre criticism and theatre theory.
4. To point out other, more intimate relations of criticism and theory in Anglo-Saxon countries. The fundamentally differences of the German theatre research tradition from the domesticated tradition in Central Europe. To establisht the advantages and disadvantages of both concepts.

Discussion, concept interpretation, text reading and analysis, production recordings analysis when necessary.

1. Critique issues in considering theatre in its breadth and complexity.
2. The function of theatre critique in the past and today
3. Mutual relationship of the theatre critique and theatre theory
4. Differing contexts of critique and theory in Anglo-Saxon lands. The basic difference ofGerman and Central European theatre research tradition.
5. Advantages and disadvantages of both concepts.

- Assessment methods and criteria:

Grades and credit are awarded based a minimum of 80% lecture participation which is a condition for sitting the exam. Grading is done upon completion of the lecture cycle with the submission of a written review, which the student writes on a defined theatre - theory issue topic. Grading continues with the subsequent oral exam.
