Course contents:

Instruction is a combination of theory fundamentals and exercises to achieve the maximum knowledge of the potential manners of directing actors.

Curriculum:

The module or block instruction should be made up of these three parts:

- Theory

- Practice

- Discussion

Theory:

In the theory part, the instructor explains the topic of the module and gives the theory presentation and instructs students - directors on how to use a particular technique.

The lecturers also present examples from their own experience or samples from film or theatre.

Practice:

A one-page writing of a simple drama situation. Students distribute roles, and one of them is the director and one the so called observer and the others act.

Under the supervision of the instructor, they rehearse the drama situation. The so called observer is to, from a distance, monitor the whole process, notice and notate errors which the director makes.

After class exercise, the instructor calls on the „actors“ to review which instructions from the director were clear, what was able to be acted and what not at all.

Finally, the instructor also analyses the manner of guiding the actors and suggests other options to the director.

Then, another student takes the role of the director and attempts to direct the same situation and not repeat errors of their predecessor. The entire process is repeated and at the end the instructor summarizes if there was some shift, if the approach of the director to the actors improved.

Then all students will be tasked to analyse, on paper, the rehearsed drama situation, with an emphasis on whether their engagement overcame some issues or acting weaknesses which were shown during the rehearsals. Upon analysis of some storyboards, the best will be shot with a DV camera.

After recording the „actors“ reflect upon the student-director and the problems experienced before the camera.

Discussion section:

The students have the task to read an approved book or a part of it at the end of which there will be a discussion about what in that book spoke to them. Most often it is an article or autobiography of a well-known director and the discussion will be over those parts which involve working with actors.
