Learning outcomes of the course unit:

To acquaint students with important roles of the film designer and architect in a film as a whole. To show the importanc of the setting and use of props as a part of the complete film.

Mode of study:

Screening of a feature-length film examples and short films from 35mm copies. Discussions over developing a given topic in the screened films - structure of film language, visual aspect, film architecture and narrative.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Bearing in the history of Czech cinema and forming of a given topic in world cinema. Knowledge of the basic structure elements of a film. Film language methods and film directing.

Course contents:

35mm copies of Czech feature films from the 1960s-70s will be shown regarding given topics. During subsequent discussion focusing on the artistic development of the films, we will present the most significant Czech filmmakers and narrators of the selected period and analyse selected films.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded based on 100% attendance in screenings and discussions, student participation in discussions over films and non-obligatory potential development of a paper - an analysis of a film narration and artistic elements in a selected film or a consideration of the entire cycle of films.
