Learning outcomes of the course unit:

A series of lectures will be given by interesting personalities in the field of photography and the theory of photography. It is aimed at broadening students´ horizons and taking a critical approach to contemporary artists and theorists.

Mode of study:

Each student will chose ONE lecture PER SEMESTER and will write essays on IT. These essays should further elaborate on the topic. It should be a critical and analytical study not just reproduction of what was said by the guest or his or her biography.

These essays are to be written, amounting to at least two pages of text each (3600 signs).

Deadline: always before the end of the semester.

Course Description:

This series consists of lectures, which will be given by outstanding personalities, who are linked to photography. The series is connected to History of Photography and Theory of Photography courses. The basis given by these courses is, however, modified by specific themes and approaches of the invited guests (lecturers). Students can thus learn on various approaches to photography, art, culture and other important issues.

The invited photographers will lecture on their own art-work, which means they will show their own way of presenting and understanding it and their own opinions and interpretations of it.

Part of the course will be dedicated to lectures given by theorist of photography and visuality.

The lectures are chosen in such a way to show variety of approaches to a given theme.

After each lecture there is time for question and discussion.

The main objective of the following seminar is to analyze the given lectures. This analytical discussion is based on the essays that the students are supposed to write on the given lectures. These essays -or selected ideas from them- are read on following seminar which should become a critical workshop . The essays should be a feedback to the lectures.

SS exam :

The credit/exam will be given on the basis of given essay on the theme and a discussion among teacher and the students about these essays. The ability to analyze the topics within the lectures in submitted essay will be the key criterion.

Grading will be based on the students´ ability to summarize the content of the lectures and correctly interpret the covered topics, together with the ability to form his or her own opinion on the specific issues.

THE ESSAY HAS TO BE SENT TO THE TEACHER AT LEAST 48 HOURS BEFORE THE EXAM.

The following aspects will have an impact on the grade according to specified proportions:

Final essay: 40%

Joint discussion above essays: 50%

Participation: 10%.
