Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Mask performance is similar to peformance with a puppet or an animated figure. The seminar goes over the principles of this method of performance.

Mode of study:

Intensive instruction module taking place at UVS Poněšice. Part of instruction is practical physical exercise. Appropriate exercise attire is necessary with no printing and in neutral colors.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

This course provides insight into acting with different types of theatrical masks. No particular preparations are required.

Recommended optional programme components:

No prerequisites.

Course contents:

Performing with masks is similar to peforming with puppets, animated figures, inanimate objects and, in the same sense, sketched characters This course covers performance method principles. An internal sense of a figure playing in a theatrical manner enables the student to better understand the actor's psychological processes in creating characters and using them in their own work with puppets or other inanimate objects in an animated film.

Credit conditions: ex. 3 credits for 100% participation

Note: Registration for this module is open for a maximum of 15 (5 from the Animation Dept, 5 from HAMU, and 5 free places for other interested parties). Registration must be completed personally with Ms. Lenka Činovska, secretary (244 234 356, lenka.cinovska@famu.cz)

This course is required for 2nd year bachelor study.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Study of masks types according to type of acting:

Neutral, character, expressive and dynamic.

Classification according to method of production and function:

Character masks:

Whole-face masks.

Semi-masks - covering only part of the face.

Expressive masks covering the whole body.

Static and dynamic masks (ex. make-up or projected).

Interpretation of individual masks:

Perception of content and form of the mask. Respect for the material and from this element investigating a manner of managing masks. Setting and playing a situation with a mask.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Active approach to physical exercise, which guides one to the understanding of fundamental relations of acting with mask.
