Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Working with a mask is closely related to an animator working with a puppet or inanimate object and to a certain extent the sense of a sketched figure. This course is concerned with the nature of this manner of acting. The internal feelings of a character in theatre acting enables a student to better understand the psychological process of an actor in creating a character and using it in working with a puppet or other inanimate object in an animated film.

Mode of study:

Intensive instruction module taking place at UVS Poněšice. Part of the instruction is pratical body exercises. Appropriate exercise attire with out print and in neutral color is necessary.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

This course provides an insight into acting with various types of theatre masks. No special preparations required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Study of masks types according to acting technique:

Neutral, character, expressive and dynamic.

Classification according to production technology and mask function:

Character masks:

Masks covering the whole face.

Half-masks - covering only part of the face.

Expressive masks covering the whole body.

Static and dynamic masks (ex: painted or projected on).

Interpretation of individual masks:

Perception of the content and form of a mask, respecting the material and from this element investigating manners of working with masks. Setting oneself in and acting in situation with a mask.

Assessment methods and criteria:

An active approach to body exercises which guide one to the understanding of the basic principles of acting with masks.
