Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the work of the DoP within the overall pictorial film concept which systematically uses tools of image composition (both linear and tonal).

1. Cinematography - its history, philosophy and the contemporary prestige of the profession.
European Federation of the Cinematographer´s National Associations - an introduction.
Genesis of the IMAGO book: „Making Pictures“ - A Century of European Cinematography.
2. Depicting Communicative Systems in general (theory of).
The Film Image as part of a complex communicational system.
Contrasting Still photography vs. Motion Picture Photography through their diversities.
The tools of compositional procedure and methodologies.
4. All aspects concerned with IMAGE LINEARITY.
Aspect ratio of the film image frame - the ongoing hopeless struggle for its unification. Linear composition within aspects of storytelling, continuity and emotional impact. Dominant lines within the image.
The control of perspective within the image.
The support of the 3-Dimensional impression of the image.
5. The notion of Depth of Field from the technical vs. artistic point of view.
Sharpness vs. non-sharpness as a controllable tool for image concept.
Fashionable waves.
6.The Brightness and Colour structure of the motion picture image.
Utilisation of dominant brightness and colour values within the Image.
Screening: Slides illuminating the historical development of the 'luministic' means of expression within fine art creativity.
Influences and values of fine art trends. The notion: 'twilight'.
7. The command of the 3-D impression of the image by recording the light increment or decrement on a subject/object as dependent on its distance from the light source.
A comprehensive understanding of contemporary light sources designed for movie shooting as the main cinematographer's creative tool.
8. The intentional use of 'Twilight' representation as part of the image concept .
The limitations imposed by the boundary (marginal) regions of the Gamma curve of the negative stock. Low key / High Key representation.
The crucial notion: Lighting Ratio.
9.Movement and Time phenomena in the hands of the DoP.
Camera movement without a change of its space position.
The employment of spatial camera movement. Screening of examples demonstrating actual technical means. Time manipulation within the shot.
10.The summary of the subject. Question / answer time.
