The aim of the study is, in three semesters, to acquire a basic knowledge of the development of international cinematography from pre-history to the 1980s. This will include the most significant types, genres, directions, styles and personalities from the viewpoint of the whole scope of cinematography, including politcal, economic, artistic relationships, life-style and the like. Basic lecture information is supplemented by study of the course literature and individual viewings of recommended films.
The lectures and screenings are the fundamentals of the knowledge necessary for a better comprehension of related specialized lectures.

Lectures are intended for 1st year students and only requires a knowledge of world history, geography, literature, visual arts, theatre and the like at the primary school level. A certain level of English is required for reading of subject literature and subtitles of presented films.

Requirements for successful completion of the course:
1) Reading of required literature, that is, the books: David Bordwell; Kristin Thompson: Film History: An Introduction. McGraw-Hill, 1994 or the Czech edition „Historie Filmu“, several copies available in the FAMU library. For the test concluding each semester, it is sufficient to read all the parts of those books which cover the periods covered in lectures in the given semester.
Gerneral supplementary literature for lectures (D´Agostini, Paolo: Legendární filmy, Praha 1989; Sova, Dawn B.: Zakázané filmy, Praha 2005; Toterberg, Michael (ed): Lexikon světového filmu, Praha ? Litvínov 2005). The supplementary literature for individual lectures is largely found in the syllabuses. (The supplementary literature is not required. It only serves as help for student studies in subsequent years.)
2) Viewing compulsory films
An inseparable part of the lecture material is the viewing of 2-3 compulsory films, of which at least one will be shown at the school in the lecture. The others must be viewed by the students independent of the lecture. With the exception of some films shown during lectures, all compulsory films are available on VHS or DVD in the FAMU video library.
Be aware that the test or exam one question will focus on the verification of knowledge of the compulsory films.
3) Knowledge of the lecture material.
Grading:
Each of the three semester series of the History of Film is concluded with an exam in which one fundamental topics is tested, as second supplementary question is on one film. Aside from some very important cases, the exact year of production is not required. It is sufficient to place it within +/-5 years. For example: The first/second half of the 1920s, turn of the 1940s to 50s, beginning of the 1960s, etc.)

Each (of three) semesters of the History of Film cycle is an exam in which the student is queried about one basic topics, a second supplementary question about a film (aside from exceptional and significant cases the exact date of production of a film or phenomenon will not be required: It is enough to arrange them into a +/- 5 year range, ex: half of the 20s, turn of the 40s to 50s, beginning of the 60s, etc.).
