Learning outcomes of the course unit:

To introduce the history and basic theory of exhibiting graphic arts, including photography, video and other forms of the moving image.

To discuss current exhibition treatments visited during excursions.

To point out possible technical procedures used in exhibiting.

To prepare students in working with individual elements of an exhibit presentation.

Mode of study:

Classroom lecture weeks focused on history alternate with weeks in which there will be visits to previously determined exhibitions accompanied by the instructor and exhibit curator.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

No requirements.

Recommended optional programme components:

No elective requirements.

Hisotry of exhibiting from the French Salon to modernity in a nutshell.

An exhibition as an independent expression means.

Minimalism and its influence on the understanding of exhibition design.

Conceptual art and manners of its exhibition

Harald Szeemann as a model curator

New Media in a gallery

Curation and ethics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Half of the course is planned history lectures in the classroom. The second half will be excursions to exhibition spaces during installation exhibitions with the curator, who installed them.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Student have two options for grading:

1. To write a paper of at least 5 standard pages analysing the exhibit prior approved by the instructor from an installation viewpoint.

2. Participation in a GAMU workshop from 30, Aug - 11 Sept. in which the „recycled“ and preinstalled exhibit will be repeated.
