Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Fingering technique, security in intonation, rhythmic sense, tone and breathing quality and interpretation imagination are instructed using the most difficult etudes. Recital pieces are oriented towards pivotal French Horn repertoire.

1. The most challenging etudes in the technique, embouchure, rhythmic and breathing aspects. Precise intonation and technique is given attention - Nauber, Kautsky.

2. Double staccato is instructed to each student

3. Pivotal French horn recital pieces - Mozart, K. Turner, R. Strauss, L. v. Beethoven.

Mode of study:

On-going participation in chamber competitions and in symphonic and opera orchestra auditions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to the study year and student profile.

Recommended optional programme components:

Chamber literature in duets, trios and other combinations of wind, string, keyboard and percussion instruments.

Course contents:

The French horn is an instrument of many music groups. This course provides the student with all skills needed for playing the French horn. The course must guide the student to the final bachelor's study. All work with the student considers the bachelor's graduation concert and the bachelor's thesis. An appropriate topic and repertoire are investigated. To provide the student with the highest level of techical challenge etudes are selected from those with the most difficult technical, embouchure and breathing aspects - Nauber, Kaucky. Students achive refined fingering technique with the ability to hold any tone. The tone quality must fulfill the reqirements of compositions from all periods. The intonation level must bear the most demanding of requirements. Necessary is a personal approach. The repertoire of this course reflects the interests of the students and become a sort of calling card. It is, of course, necessary to go through the pivotal clarinet repertoire - Mozart, Turner, R. Strauss, L. v. Beethoven. It is best when the thesis which is of particular interest to the student. This enables the broadest and highest quality of development. Double staccato is taught to all students.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Student participation in Chamber Music competitions and auditions for symphonic and opera orchestras.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Student performance is assessed in all facets of performance. First of all the composition the student played is examined and individual pitfalls of performance are pointed out. Also assessed is how the student dealt with these problems. Noted, as well, is the playing level of the student in terms of technique, intonation, sound, dynamics and performance.
