This course provides students with all skills for good quality reed modification. This course covers reed edge modification and the influence of those modification on tone, intonation, staccato, tone quality, dynamics, etc. The edge of the reed plays a decisive role in the release of tone and ease of play. It has influence on color and with the tip, release, legato and staccato. The possibe ways of how to modify the edges are many. It is necessary to compare wood quality and select the most appropriate modification. The reed edges are very sensitive to modification and it is necessary to carefully consider the correct manner. The student is guided in proper decisions for these modifications. The knife selection and its shape is also important for each. Poorly selected modifications are compare and the results of these errors demonstrated. A comparison of cut by different producers is part of instruction. Edge issues are explained in the context of other parts of the reed such as the tip, center, etc. This is all the content of the course.
- Mode of study:
-
Playback of students from the clarinet classes with reeds they adjusted themselves.
- Prerequisites and co-requisites:
-
Reed adjustments according to style specifics, high tone sound flexibilty, extreme dynamic and double-staccato.
- Recommended optional programme components:
-
none

This course provides the student with all the practical and methodological skills required for modifying clarinet reeds. This course covers the possible modifications to the edges of the reed and the influence of those modifications on tone, intonation, staccato, tone quality, setting dynamics, etc. The reed edges play a decisive role for releasing a tone, ease of play, has influence on color and with the tip an influence on fitting, legato and staccato. The possible edge modifications are many. It is necessary to compare wood quality and select the most appropriate modification. The reed edges are very sensitive to modifications and it is necessary to carefully consider the manner. Students are guided to proper decisions in those modifications. The knife selection and shape are important as well and often individual. Poor modifications are compared and the results of those mistakes are shown. A comparison of edge trimming by various producers is part of instruction. Edge issues are explained in a context of other parts of the reed such as the tip, middle and bottom. This is the course instruction content.
