Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim is to enable a deeper penetration into the area of so called historic dance from a practical point of view. To acquire an ability to dance well, interpret taught choreographis of social dances of the previous century. To recognize the relationship of dance and music in the aspect of rhythm, tempo and dynamics. To be aware of the relationship between movement technique, dance style and dance content. To acquire a knowledge of the interpretation of dance notation.

Mode of study:

Practice classes in which the students learn to master a given dance repertoire according to practice with the instructor and their own notation resource research. The students learn to distinguish movment styles of a given dance from a certain period, analyse the movement, rhythm and character aspects.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Good physical condition. Movement coordination. Musicality. Theory knowledge from history lectures. (ex: Introduction to the History of Dance and Ballet 1 and 2.)

Recommended optional programme components:

No elective requirements.

Course contents:

Dance of the French Renaissance - terminology and fundamental steps from Orchesographie Thoinot Arbeau. Reverance, double, simple, branle, reprise, cinq pas de galliarde, galliard variations. Basse danse, tourdin, pavane, dalliarde, branles. Notation issues. Ikonography study.

Dance of the Italian Renaissance - terminology and fundamental steps according to the Italian books of F. Caros and C. Negri. Selection of dance for performance, for example: Villanella, Bizzaria d' amore, Ardente sole, Spagnoletta. Notation issues and ikonography study.

Classes in a dance hall.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Condtions for credit are: class participation, preparations at home related to reviewing the material and study of trade literature. Presentation of the studied dances before and audience.
