Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course is linked to the course Folkdance Education Seminar 1. It covers the Brno and part of the Slovacka regions.

Mode of study:

Watching films, dance recordings of individual areas and the mastery of selected dances in the course in the dance hall.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Independent student activity. Focused on acquireing information about the given region whose development will be used in teaching folkdance.

Recommended optional programme components:

No elective requirements.

Course contents:

Dances from the Brno region: The Brno region is demarked as the land between Hana, Horacko and Slovacko. Its center is made up of the city Brno with a number of communities which have become suburbs of Brno. The continue to today to maintain their costumes, customs and dances for celebrations. Some dances are selected from rich material and the students learn these.

a) The Brno suburbs: Moravská z Obřan, Vláčitá z Maloměřic, Skočná z Maloměřic, Čardáš z Líšně, Kozácká stará z Maloměřic, Řeznická and Třasák z Komína, Zahradník I and II z Komína, Tajč (šópavá) z Bystrce, Šotyška z Tuřan, Ševcovská z Tuřan, Dupák and Hulán z Líšně, Šotyška z Líšně.

b) Greater Brno region: Bublavá ze Šlapanic, Kovářská ze Šlapanic, Mazurka z Újezdu u Brna, Pantalone ze Šlapanic, Vláčitá z Kuřimi, Rédovák ze Střelic, Kohátek, Svatební tanec z Troubska, Harvest dances around Zlaté baby z Ořechovic, Kukaná and Mazurka z Omnic, Hanácká od Slavkova, Materská od Slavkova.

Dances from Slovacko 1: Slovacko lies in the most southern corner of Morava. The area belongs to the most extensive Moravian Ethnographic region. The hilly region of Slovacko differes significantly in its character, way of living and folk culture from flat lands:

a)Moravské Kopanice: Obtáčaná ze Starého Hrozenkova, Sedlcká z Březové, Přešlapovaný čardáš, Prechýtaný čardáš z Kopanic, Podšable and Straňanská za Strání, Dvojpalicový and Štyrpalicový z Vyškovce.

b)Horňácko: Starosvětská z Velké nad Veličkou, Sedlácká z Velké nad Veličkou, ze Suchova, z Nové Lhoty, z Lipova, Do skoku z Velké nad Veličkou, Verbuňk z Velké n/V, z Liptova, z Louky, Žabská z Velké n/V, Jatelinka z Velké n/V.

c)Luhačovské zálesí: Točená s obuškem z Pozlovic, Podtáčaná z Biskupic, Sedlcká z Částkova, Sedlcká z Dobrkovic, Točená z Provodova.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

This course is linked to „Folk Dance Education 1“. This course covers Brno and part of Slovakia. Students create a movement for a given area. VHS cassettes with authentic recordings of native dancers from those areas are used in instruction.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Partipation in class, preparation of at least one movement-dance variation for the folklore area covered (technique preparations of the dance skills of the given area) are required.
