Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The first choreographic work inspired by a narrative. A choreography of large social dances in examples and a developed choreographic script.

Mode of study:

Presentation, classes, discussion, exercises.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Choreography study students much be graduates of a dance conservatory or another vocational school of similar significance. They must have been a dancer in a professional ballet ensemble or other professional dance ensemble. The student must pass the entrance process, have talent, imagination, managerial and organizational skills for performing as a creative choreographer.

Recommended optional programme components:

No elective requirements.

Course contents:

Creating one's own choreography inspired by the literature, that is a program composition in a dramatic duet. The choreography directing preparations and implementation of a dramatic dance duet. Psychological and content development of roles (Ex: the symphonic overture „Jealousy“ by L. Janáček). The student must study libretto of an opera „Jenufa“, become acquainted with the period environment,surroundings, period and overall climate of the story which will influence the exterior (costuming, set, props, weapons), and internal actions of the duet dancers (conflict, psychological bonds, emotions, influence of the period on the behaviour of people, folk tradions). It is the students choice of music for their choreography. The basic approach to the topic must be similar as in the presented example.

The student studies their choreography with the dancers and presents it on stage in simple but functional and meaningful costumes and settings.

Also, each student is required to study choreography samples inspired by period social dances at the turn of the 19th to 20th century. This is three etudes: Grand Viennese Waltz, French Can-can and the Charleston.

Students prepare a dance floor movement plan, arranges the period music recording, announces the period tastes, fashions and prepares an example with the use of the dance style elements.
