Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Continuing the Music Text Analysis 4 course. Study of medium length and complexity literature with a focus on writing on 20th century music. A gradual transition to more extensive theory writings. The semester paper requires a significant amount of independent handling and critical assessment of the issues concerned.

Mode of study:

Classes with individual student performances and subsequent discussion.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Completion of Music Theory Text Analysis 4. No other requirements.

Course contents:

A required course for Music Theory studies. Instruction is 1 hour per week in the summer semester of the 2nd year of Master's study. Linking of Music Theory, History and Classification. Independent study of intermediate extent and complex music theory writingsfocused on 20th century music. Parallel study of classic music theory writings. The semester paper is to be of critique-evaluation character with an increased section of the students distinctive approach to the material.
