Learning outcomes of the course unit:

To broaden knowledge in basic psycho-acoustic events connected in particular to the perception of musical signals.

Mode of study:

1 hour per week.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Basic knowledge of physiologic and music acoustics.

Course contents:

Simple tone perception, non-linear distorted hearing

Perception of two simple tones, beats, first class events, the critical band width.

Further first class events, aural and combination tones.

Second class events, untuned consonant beats

Fundamental tone perception, residual tone

Distinction mechanisms in musical sounds.

Sound color, acoustic and psycho-acoustic concepts

Sound frequency structure and its internal interaction

Illustration of the sound spectrum, interval and formant concepts

Schumann's tone color law and its application

Sound color as a time-space (binaural) phenomenon

Verbal and non-verbal tone color evaluation methods.
