Learning outcomes of the course unit:

To supplement the material covered in the history of theatre lectures and complete one's research work so the students can securely find a bearing in the given period.

A good bearing in the individual phases of cultural events.

Recommended optional programme components:

Monitor of performances attempting the current significance of classic works.

Course contents:

This course develops the material covered in the Theatre in the Context of Western Culture and Theatre in Czech Culture. The Winter semester focuses on selected topics in the history of world and Czech theatre from the end of the 19th century to the present. These topics are covered:

The beginnings of European Theatre Modern (naturalism and symbolism)

K.S. Stanislavsky and MCHT.

A. Appia and G. Craig

Russian and French Avant garde of the 1920s.

B. Brecht.

A. Artaud.

The Second Theatre Reform (P. Brook, J. Grotowski, E. Barba).

Post-dramatic theatre (T. Kantor)

Modern issues of drama, directing and acting.

Emphasis is placed on the independent completion of a selected topic for the course paper.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Classes. Development and defense of the course paper (min. 8 pgs.) developing an assigned topic with the aid of archive material. Review and continual assignment of literature.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Graded is the research contribution and originality of the course paper on an assigned topic. Class participation is considered.
