The aim of the two-semester course is to broaden, through specialized video screenings and discussions, student awareness of important directors and the development of modern Czech theatre in the 20th century.

The course core is made up of two series: Czech theatre direction - a series of documentary portraits of a number of important directors of the 20th century (Kvapil, Hilar, E.F.Burian, Frejka, Honzl, Radok, Grossman, Krejča, Macháček, Schorm, Smoček, and others.) and paradoxes of modern Czech theatre - a 5 part serial, which, based on archive material and examples from perfromances documents the development of Czech theatre after the Second World War to October of '89 and directly after.
