The aim of the two-semester course is to broaden, through specialized video screenings and discussions, student awareness of important directors and the development of modern Czech theatre in the 20th century.

The course core is comprised of two series: Czech Theatre Directing - a seried of documentary portraits of several significant directors of the 20th century (Kvapil, Hilar, E.F.Burian, Frejka, Honzl, Radok, Grossman, Krejča, macháček, Schorm, Smoček, and others) and paradoxes of moder Czech theatre - a five part series which, based on archive marterial and performance examples documents the development of Czech theatre after WWII up to October '89 and immediately after.
