Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The student, through translation work is acquainted with the issues and pitfalls of a professional translation. They learn the differences between the simple reading/understanding of a foreign language text and its translation to a target language. They handle issues of terminology shifts between individual language and seemingly established professional concepts. In the translation of one comprehensive professional text students verify their abilities to precisely, clearly, in terminology and style properly interpret a foreign language model text.

Independent work on a translation, discussions over individual versions

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Minimum B1 level foreign language knowledge.

Recommended optional programme components:

No elective requirements.

Course contents:

This course focuses on the translation of trade texts (theory, history, essays), in particular, terminology issues in translation from the original language to the target language. Each student, upon approval by the instructor, selects a trade text of adequate length (3-8 pages) related to the topic of their thesis and translates it (including citations already exisiting in the Czech translation, etc.)
