Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The graduation film is the unique aim of documentary directing study at FAMU. This means that a mature person announces to society and the professional public their personal vision of formal and subjective attack on the deficiences of attitudes of live in the country or in small communities in its area with information about possible remedies of attitudes. The graduation film, if there is real talent, those interested should have an idea who it is and what intentions have arisen in the artistic world. The truth is that this challenge is not fulfilled by all but this is the risk of the arts. The graduation film must be for those who do not fulfill this highest ambition and opportunity for achieving a position in commercial flm - will be lead away from the trade.

Mode of study:

Students may consult about the film in the „Implementation Workshop.“

Classification deadline: Summer semester, submitted by 5, September to the Documentary Dept.

Screenplay deadline: by 1, September or the end of the Winter semester (Jan.)

Completion deadline: October - August

Shooting technology: 16mm (or Betacam Digital), contact sound

Footage: 30-40 minutes

Number of shooting days: 30 days (20 with sound camera)

Material: 1708 m 16mm color negative (or 9x Betacam Digital 64 camera)

Sound material: mg 16mm for transfer to mx 440m; 6x DAT 65; 1x S-VHS and VHS; 1x CD-R

Image technology: Sound camera 20 days (AATON SUPER 16, AATON LTR, ECLAIR ACL, ECLAIR NPR), silent camera 16mm 10 days (or 30 days Betacam Digital preview set)

Sound Technology: DAT recorder FOSTEX PD-4 30 days, or NAGRA IV, or mixing table

Editing: 80 freq. AVID, including log for sound post-production

Sound Post-production: sound FAMU Studio - selection and transfer of statement, music and background noise, commentary recording 3 freq; preparation and setting mixing tracks - digital sound editing table 6 freq.; digital mixing worktable 4 freq; transfer of mix to master

Transfer: (according to the recording technology used) 16mm negative or Betacam Digital - DV cam, DV cam - VHS and DVD, DV cam - S-VHS with TC

Archiving: (16mm two-track or also kk - NFA), DV cam - FAMU Studio, VHS and DVD - Documentary Dept. Video Library.

Course contents:

Group exercise, 2nd year master's study, Documentary Dept:

The film may combine documentary elements with stylizations or the tools of feature film. Other than 16mm production technology may be selected (ex: 35mm, Super 16mm or Betacam Digital), the requirement is only on capacity (internal and external) recalculated considering that standard. An increase in capacity may be requested through a FAMU grant within the announced deadlines.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Each graduation film comes out of the Implementation workship under the leadership of one instructor and consulted upon with other department instructors - according to student selection. It is guaranteed that the student manages a dialogue with artists, who are close to the student and artists (instructors) who consider the talent far away. This is the manner ins which the department takes care of the the particualar talents of each student.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is acquired based on successfull presentation and defense of a film.
