Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Introduction to and instruction in the most important graphic equipment used in modern digital image post-production.

Mode of study:

Presenation, visual accompaniment, digital special effects examples, Detailed example analyses. Screening of special effects passages, in the presence of the creator of most examples. Discussion with students over their projects.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Fundamental knowledge of classical technological-duplication process effects. Basic awareness of digital photography. Orientation in digital post-production technology.

Course contents:

1. Digital equipment and procedures in effects.

1.1.1. Silicon Graphics, Discreet Logic

1.1.2. Introduction to techical standards, formats and resolutions used.

2. 2D graphics and 2D animation

2.1.1. Image color correction

2.1.2. Digital keying

2.1.3. Other equipment used in digital image post-production

3. 3D graphics and 3D animation

3.1.1. Modelling, production of wire models

3.1.2. Setting object movement, motion capturing.

3.1.3. Setting object surface, material, color, gloss, shadow, transparency.

3.1.4. Working with surfaces, projection potential, deformation, space projection, parison surfaces.

3.1.5. Digital composition in the real image, in parts of the real image and their integration.

3.1.6. 3D - scene free camera movement, various lenses, light use (main, effects), importance and use of shadow and reflection.

3.1.7. 3D - particle system - given particles, sources of origin, speed of movement, gravity, field strength, collision, particle lifespan, changes in brightness, changes in color, explosions, stars. Physical manifestation simulations - rain, fire, smoke.

3.1.8. Effects - Deadtime, Bullet time - stopping time in space, potential.

4. Scanning and recording digital signals onto a film negative.

4.1.1. Scanning, scanner types, Cineon Genesis, issues.

4.1.2. Digital film recorders, Digital film recorder types, Celko, Arrilaser

4.1.3. Digital intermedia

4.1.4. Digital cinematography

Credit is awarded based on participation in lectures, grading takes place individually through an interview, topic questions, explanation of procedures in particular cases.
