Learning outcomes of the course unit:

An awareness of the boundlessness of genres in film, Equal use of expression tools (feature film vs. documentary)

- development of the cameraman - director relationship.

- adoption of basic lighting principles and use of ambient light in documentary genres.

- discussions about projects (terminology of basic thoughts and motivation and their conveyance to collaborants).

Mode of study:

Systematic preparations by Camera Dept. students to function as the cameraman for shooting a documentary film.

Discussions, analyses, screenings.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

The requirement is the completion of "The Fundamentals of Cameraman practice in the 1st year of study at the Camera dept.

1. Film or TV camera - particulars and selection for documentary projects.

2. Cinematic formats.

a/ Film: Super8, 16mm, 35mm, 70mm, IMAX, OMNIMAX

b/ Television: VHS, DV, HDV, Betacam, HDTV

c/ Computer multimedia

3. DVCAM - HD - DigitalCinema - new - free technology

4. Film stock, selection, exposure trials, the film lab.

5. Lighting techniques for documentary film

6. Camera movement, technical equipment for movement, image stabilizers, Hand cameras.

7. Infra-red shooting

8. Shooting in rain, snow, freezing conditions and sandstorms.

9. Arctic and high altitude environments.

10. Tropical environments

11. Expedition equipment

12. The camera in space, at the bottom of the ocean

13. High-speed and time-lapse recording

14. Macro and micro-recording

15. Film and digital effects in documentary film.

16. Film reporting, archiving issues

17. Television reporting, Technological procedures and history.
