Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Management of basic skills in creating a light reconstruction in the studio and on location.

Mode of study:

Lighting 3 further develops the courses Lighting 1 and 2 from the 1st. year. Lectures, consultations and the analyses of selected films or television works introduce the students to general issues in the function and effect of light as a cameraman's basic means of expression. Lectures in Lighting II are supplemented with film and TV examples. The study year students, in a group, shoot, under the guidance of the instructor, a exposition and tonal test of negative Kodak 5222 material as a practical for preparation for the „Shots in the studio“ and „Anti-corrosive Knife.“ As well individual consultations take place regarding the exercises.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Knowledge of all types of light sources and their characteristics. Mastery of creating a light-tone treatments for an image with the use of the sensitometric characteristics negative stock

Course contents:

A course for 2nd year Camera dept. students. „Lighting II“ continues in the development of material from „Lighting I“ of the 1st year of study. In lectures, consultations and analyses of selected films or TV works, students are introduced to functional and effect issues of lighthing as a cameraman's fundamental means of expression. Emphasis is placed on the technical mastery of lighting which contains film stock characteristics, exponometrics, the characteristics of various light sources, set photographic qualities, costuming and make-up, an a unique view of the light-tone atmosphere resulting from the lighting construction. As well creative issues regarding the electronic image with particular modifications resulting from the recording media used are discussed. Student theory knowledge is checked through the practical exercises „Shots in the Studio“, and the studio scenario „Anti-corrosive Knife“. The shooting of those two practical exercises preceeds the group shooting and evaluation test of the use of negative material which is based on the FAMU 35mm Exposure standard exposure table and exposure modulator. Also, will be a group shooting of a seated model before a particular background, lit at various levels defined beforehand and an evaluation in screening while copying.

Topics:

1. LIGHTING II - GENERAL COURSE INTRODUCTION - Program and aims of the lectures, consultations and 2nd year practical exercises.

2. SPACE LIGHTING. Sets, placement of light sources lighting logics, lighting and acting , use of color gels

3. FUNDAMENTALS OF LIGHT TREATMENTS. Lighting plan, set lighting, light source types and characteristics, bridges, film and TV genres.

4. LIGHTING IN FILM AND TELEVISION. Some differences in manners of working with light dependent upon shooting or sequential technology.

5. LIGHT CONSTRUCTION AND COLOR TELEVISION RECORDING. Color evaluation of a set, costuming and make-up in relation to the lighting treatment. Lighting in blue background effects shooting (clamping).

6. LOCATION LIGHT MANAGEMENT. Supplementary lighting of the location, working with ambient lighting sources, appropriate lights and accessories, color gels.

7. LIGHTING AN EXTERIOR - DAY. Exterior lighting characteristics, light contrast managment, lamp types, reflectors.

8. Lighting evenings and nights in exteriors, character of night lighting and difference from day lighting, early evening light, dawn.

9. Special light atmospheres: flames, candle torch, auto lighting/day, night/American night, Computer screen for Television, exterior and interior flashes, and the like.
