Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Implementation of the proposal and typesetting of a simple document with an emphasis on the relationship between the photo image, letters and graphic symbols.

Course description:

This course is devoted to a book as the bearer of information and an artistic object.

This course provides the basics in book graphics.

This includes editorial work, computer development of breaks in the InDesign application and book document pre-printing preparations. There is a polygraphic minimum necessary for selecting the reproduction technology and communicating iwth the printer, basics of classical and alternative bookbinding. Also presented is photo image graphics technology.

The practical section is conducted in two directions: the creation of a so-called creator's book, a artistic artefact either in the form of a classic book or an object which goes beyond the borders of this form. Basic sources are one's own photography and own or second-hand text.

The alternative direction is the creation of an advertising catalogue. Here the emphasis is on the simultaneous treatment of the photographic and typographic elements. Part of the work is the treatment of the polygraphics.

In both cases emphasis is placed primarily on the inventive approach in the conception of the book document.

Tasks: (exercises 3P5)

Winter semester:

1/ Mock-up of presentation catalogue of one's own photography, format 210x420, 4 pages

Requirements for start:

Preview print on inkjet printer, format 1:1, two-sided mock-up

Summer semester:

1/ Creative Book, 12 pages + cover, minimally 15x15cm format, or advertising catalogue minimally 210x200mm format, 12 pages + cover.

Photography, text and other graphic elements are considered equal visual components.

The book topic must be established by the end of Sept. in a brief written explication on the topic selection and manner of development.

Requirements for start:

1/ Printed start understood as the final authorized phase, bookbinding ready book printing.

2/ Mock-up. Preview on an inkjet printer. Developed document allowing for polygraphic processing.

During the course there are, as well, consultations and treatments of student selected photography publications in collaboration with the instrutor of their photographs section.
