Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is to manage the basics of image composition in theory and in practice. Assignments require an ability in analytical research and lead to independent artistic work.

Mode of study:

Analysis of exercises. Screening work, in relation to the topic. Independent artistic work.

Students in internships abroad refer to the content and aims of the stay abroad. Presentation of their work and discussions about it.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Students are required to have a general knowledge of image composition theory.

Recommended optional programme components:

No elective requirements.

Course contents:

This course expands theory and practical knowledge of photographic image composition. The fundamental topic is still-life, classical and modern. The reconstruction and interpretation of the given basis, including the corresponding tonal and lighting treatment, confirms skills in using the specific potential of the photographic image. Individual tasks provide sufficient space for student creativity and, as well, require quality in technique. Photos taken during internships abroad are placed into an appropriate context by the students.

I. Complete a least two photos in which the composition is derived from classical still-life painting /ex: Dutch still-life of the 17th century/ the subjects used needn't go together. With the agreement of the instuctor, this may also come from a contemporary basis. The first photograph should be more of a reconstruction and the second and interpretation of the given basis

II. Complete photos of various types of modern still-lifes:

a) significantly aesthetisized (stylized) (min. 2 photos).

b) Non-stylized (min. 2 photos).

Deadlines: explication by the end of Oct, photos by the end of the winter semester.

Technical requirements: photos at least 30x40cm, photos according to an image of classical negative without digital manipulation, others according to student intentions, classical and digital prints.

Grading:

Graded credit: awarded based on the submitted exercise. Graded is to what extent the assignment was fulfilled, originality and quality.

Attendance: 60% attendance in classes and participation in required group consultations established at the beginning of instruction are required.
